Lee Dixon shares what Mauricio Pochettino would have told his Tottenham Hotspur players at half-time during Dortmund win

Tottenham Hotspur beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Lee Dixon has stated that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino would have told his players at half-time to ‘up the intensity a little bit’ and ‘break down the lines’ following their 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

The first-leg of the Champions League knockout encounter was goalless after 45 minutes, but Heung-min Son, Jan Vertonghen and substitute Fernando Llorente struck three goals in the second period to the stun the visitors.

Pochettino’s side now take a deserved three-goal lead going into the second leg in Germany as Dortmund have a mountain to climb in securing their passage into the next round.

Nonetheless, former Premier League winner Dixon shared what Pochettino would have told his side during his half-time team talk, which ended up proving to be game-changing.

“They would have had instructions at half-time, ‘right we need to get our men into the game'” Dixon told BBC Radio 5 Live. “For instance, Eriksen and Son.

“[Pochettino would have been saying], ‘We need to up the intensity a little bit, break down the lines of Dortmund’, who looked very organised and comfortable in the first half.

“That goal [Son’s] changed everything. Score that early in the game and all of sudden the opposition goes ‘oh, here we go’ and they change their game plan. The intensity level went up in the second half.”

During the first period, Pochettino’s side found it tough to break down a resilient, forward-thinking Dortmund side, who were no doubt looking for the win.

But after the break, the home team upped the tempo, turned on the quality and blitz their opponents potentially out of the competition if they can see off the return leg.

Defender Vertonghen provided the cross for Son to open the scoring two minutes into the second half before he found the back of the net himself seven minutes from time.

Pochettino then introduced Llorente into the action and he scored within minutes of coming on to send the home supporters into dreamland.

The win and the manner of victory is even more impressive because Spurs are without two of their most influential players in the attacking third in Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
