Lee Dixon has predicted Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff could be the next of England’s impressive young talents to try their luck in Germany – and Toon fans have blasted the ex-Arsenal man for his comments.
Longstaff, 21, starred in Newcastle’s draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night, as Willy Boly scored in injury time to cancel out Isaac Hayden’s second-half strike.
The Toon academy product has broken into Newcastle’s side of late and dictated the midfield and tempo of play, putting his body on the line and showing composure in an otherwise frantic match.
Toon legend Alan Shearer applauded Longstaff, to which Dixon replied by claiming he could be the next talent to move to Germany – following the likes of Jadon Sancho, Reiss Nelson, Reece Oxford and Ademola Lookman.
An attacking midfielder during loans at Blackpool and Kilmarnock, Longstaff has been moulded into a number four under Rafa Benitez and certainly he was the standout despite facing Portugal internationals Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves.
Teenager Sancho is shining at Borussia Dortmund, and his success has prompted English youngsters to consider a move to Germany. Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi was the subject of multiple bids from Bayern Munich.
Newcastle fans and Shearer reacted to Dixon’s claim that Longstaff could be the next of a long list of English youngsters to chance their arm in the Bundesliga – with Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe the latest by joining RB Leipzig on loan.
