Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has failed to impress so far this season.

Wales' manager Chris Coleman follows the game from the touchline during the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualification football match between Georgia and Wales in Tbilisi on October 6, 2017.

Chris Coleman has told the Sunderland Echo that some of Sunderland’s higher earners will be put up for sale in the January transfer window.

Sunderland are looking to raise funds, as Coleman looks to add increased quality to his starting line-up at the Stadium of Light.

And the Welsh boss admits that some of Sunderland’s big earners could be offloaded to make room for new additions.

He said: “I think there is a little bit of space there for us to do some twisting and turning.

“Definitely, if we lose one or two. If we lose one or two who are on big salaries, that will free up money to bring in other people.”

Coleman’s comments could put Lee Cattermole’s place in Sunderland’s squad at risk.

Cattermole has been at Sunderland for eight years now, after moving from Wigan Athletic back in 2008, but his form has been poor this term.

Cattermole has offered very little to Sunderland, despite their drop into the Championship, and the fans at the Stadium of Light have started to get on the midfielder’s back.

The 29-year-old is on big contract at Sunderland, and if continues to put in below par performance, he will surely be put up for sale.

Sunderland are currently in 23rd in the Championship table, and getting their business right in the January transfer window, could be crucial to the Wearsiders’ survival hopes.
