Sunderland are almost certain to drop into League One next season, with Chris Coleman’s side enduring a disappointing campaign.
Lee Cattermole has criticised Sunderland’s recruitment over the past six years, and insists that is the reason why they have struggled this season, with his comments in the Chronicle.
Cattermole has been with Sunderland over the long-term, and he has seen the highs and the lows.
Unfortunately for the Black Cats, there has been far more to be miserable about than positive in recent years.
Sunderland look set for back to back relegations, with Chris Coleman’s side almost certain to be playing League One football next term.
Sunderland have actually improved in recent weeks though, after losing just one of their last five matches.
And Cattermole believes that Sunderland’s improvement stems from the squad finally getting used to playing with each other.
He said: “I have said it for five or six years – it takes time and that is why we always finish seasons stronger than we start them because we are changing 16, 17, 18 players every year.
“We look like a team now. Imagine if this were October?”
Sunderland’s most recent result was a 2-2 draw with Reading, which isn’t likely to be enough to save them.
Sunderland are currently six points adrift of safety, with just three games remaining this season.
Coleman’s side are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Burton Albion.
