Lee Cattermole has told the Sunderland Echo that the intensity of Sunderland’s training sessions has increased significantly over the past week.

Sunderland have finished the season in dire form, after winning just once in their last six matches.

The Black Cats look completely out of sorts at just the wrong time of the season.

Sunderland are set to take on Portsmouth in the play off semi final in the coming days, as they look to bounce straight back from relegation.

And Cattermole admits that Sunderland’s players are re-focusing in training now.

“The intensity in training has flown up, because I’m pretty sure everyone is looking at Saturday and wanting to be in that team,” he said.

“I think it will bring out the best in us. We can’t go out and try and win it in ten minutes, there’s two games in the tie, we have to play with our heads.”

Sunderland are under pressure to progress in the play offs, as they let automatic promotion slip.

Jack Ross’s side were well placed to take a top two spot before their end of season struggles.
