Lee Cattermole will have a key role to play if Sunderland are to earn promotion through the play offs.

Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has admitted to the Northern Echo that he never thought he would miss the penalty in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Sunderland lost on spot kicks to Portsmouth at Wembley, with Cattermole one of the unfortunate players to miss from 12 yards.

Sunderland’s defeat in the cup seems to have affected their league form, with Jack Ross’s side struggling in the final few weeks of the season.

The Black Cats missed out on claiming an automatic promotion spot, and will now enter the play offs.

Sunderland are set to take on Portsmouth in the promotion deciding fixtures.

And Cattermole is hoping for a happier outcome when his side face Pompey this time, as he wants to get back to Wembley to right the wrongs of his last visit.

“It was a brilliant game, and I felt good stepping up,” Cattermole said.

“It never even entered my head that I might miss the penalty, I never thought I’d miss it. It was disappointing, but hopefully we’ll go back there and set up a different ending. That’s the aim.”

Sunderland’s first leg against Portsmouth comes on Saturday evening, with the second leg due to be played on Thursday.
