Sunderland stopper Lee Camp has faced a great deal of criticism this season.

Lee Camp has admitted to the Sunderland Echo that he understands why he has received such criticism from Sunderland supporters.

Camp only arrived at the Black Cats in the January transfer window, but the 33-year-old has been in awful form since signing.

Camp has made numerous errors since arriving, and made a mistake at the weekend during Sunderland’s 2-2 draw with Reading.

Sunderland fans have been quick to criticise the stopper, but Camp admits that he cannot feel too hard done by.

He said: “I’m not stupid, I know some of my performances haven’t been great and I’ve had to ride that wave after not playing for a while.

“I understand the criticism and that’s fine – that’s part and parcel of the job. But I’m pleased I’ve done it.

“It’s not every day you get an opportunity to play for a football club like Sunderland.”

Camp was brought in at Sunderland in an attempt to improve their goalkeeping options, but he has been unable to do so.

The Black Cats have struggled to find a reliable goalkeeper all campaign, with Jason Steele and Robbin Ruiter also struggling.

It seems that Camp has possession of the number one shirt at Sunderland currently.

The Black Cats’ next fixture comes against Burton Albion at the Stadium of Light at the weekend.
