Lee Bullen has insisted that Sheffield Wednesday are being proactive regarding January signings, but warned that new faces may not arrive until the end of the window.
Wednesday could be without nine first team regulars through injury for Saturday’s FA Cup trip to Carlisle United, with several of those suffering setbacks this week, prompting Bullen to admit he needs “bodies in the door”.
The Scot took temporary charge of the Owls in the wake of Carlos Carvalhal’s departure on Christmas Eve, but at Thursday’s pre-game press conference, broadcast via the club’s official Facebook page, he revealed he has still been involved in the recruitment process.
Asked if discussions have taken place regarding new arrivals, Bullen replied: “Yeah, we’re being proactive, asking opinions.
“Obviously, it’s a bit of a funny one until a head coach is actually announced. But ultimately, he [Dejphon Chansiri, the Wednesday chairman] is asking opinions, asking us to put names forward (of those) who we think would sort of plug gaps at the moment.
“It’s probably more than likely going to be loan scenarios with regards to the FFP [Financial Fair Play] situation, and again it’s players that we feel can come in and hopefully enhance the group that is available, and hopefully stick straight into the first team; that can help us and maybe just give us a bit of freshness around the place, and help the players that have been out there week after week.
“We’re looking at a good quality of player. Whether or not they’re available, that’s down to their own teams. And nine times out of 10 with the loans, it’s often something you do in the last week of the window because they just have to hope they don’t lose anybody themselves for the next two or three weeks.
“So it’s a waiting game and it’s a frustrating one for us because we need bodies in the door to be honest with you.”
Bullen gave no indication as to the positions in which Wednesday intend to strengthen, but previously suggested the Owls could try to sign a centre-half to cover injuries to Tom Lees and Joost van Aken.
Wednesday are also missing goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, right-back Jack Hunt and central midfielders Kieran Lee and Barry Bannan, as well as forward trio Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher.
