Lee Bowyer will welcome his former club Leeds United to the Valley on Saturday afternoon.
Lee Bowyer has warned Leeds United that Charlton won’t be showing them ‘too much respect’ as he hinted that his team will go after the current Championship leaders.
Ahead of Saturday’s clash at the Valley, Bowyer has claimed that ‘a lot of teams’ have been showing Marcelo Bielsa’s side ‘too much respect’ this season by sitting off them and allowing them to attack and his team ‘will not be doing that’.
Bowyer helped Charlton earn promotion from League One last season, and he has done it by giving the youngsters a chance, and with it, playing attractive football.
Despite the prospect of coming up against a team that could get promoted to the Premier League this season, Bowyer made it clear that they will not sit back at the weekend.
“We’re going to have to be at it,” said Bowyer, as quoted by Leeds Live. “They’re very good at hitting you on the break and creating chances. They’re a side that could thump someone because they’re so good going forward and their recovery and fitness levels are unreal.
“We’ve got a game plan and we’re at home. We’re not just going to sit back and take the pressure. We have to play our game. A lot of teams show them too much respect and sit off them but we won’t be doing that. We’ll have our crowd behind us and will be doing the things that have got us where we are today.”
Bowyer’s potential tactics could play into the hands of Leeds and result in his team facing a big defeat, but on the other hand, if Charlton do win then they themselves will start to think about promotion.
Given the nature of the Championship and its unpredictability, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Charlton are fighting for those top-six places at the end of the season.
They are currently sitting in eighth place, three points behind Leeds, who will be well aware that if they want to stamp their authority on the league then now is the time to do it.
