Newcastle United beat Leeds United 2-0 at Elland Road yesterday.

Lee Bowyer has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 21st November, that he remained neutral for Leeds United’s match against Newcastle United yesterday.

Bowyer represented both Leeds and Newcastle during his playing days, and he could not pick a team to support when the two sides met at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

“I was neutral there, I had to be,” Bowyer said, when asked who he was supporting.

In the match, Newcastle ran out 2-0 winners against Leeds – to extend their winning run to nine games.

Newcastle scored both their goals in the match through Dwight Gayle, and Bowyer felt that there was a big difference in class between the two sides.

“You could tell the difference in quality,” he added. “You can tell a lot of Newcastle’s players are Premier League players. I think there was a big difference, really. I think they’re going to go and walk that league and easily get promotion.

“I think Monk has done well at Leeds with what he’s got, but it’s tough.”

Newcastle are now five points clear at the top of the Championship table, after making a flying start to the new season.

The Magpies already look to be certainties to be promoted back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Leeds are also in good form, despite their defeat yesterday, and sit on the outskirts of the play offs.

The Whites are in seventh place, with their next match coming against a struggling Rotherham United side at the weekend.
