Lee Bowyer reflects on Leeds United regret

Lee Bowyer didn’t win anything at Leeds United despite an all-star first XI.

Lee Bowyer has told LUTV that his greatest regret at Leeds United was not winning a trophy with the club.

The combative midfielder played a big role in helping the Whites to UEFA Cup and Champions League semi-finals in 2000 and 2001 respectively but the West Yorkshire side failed to go all the way.

On paper, Leeds had one of the best teams in England – and Europe evidently – in 2001 as David O’Leary boasted a star-studded squad comprising of Rio Ferdinand, Alan Smith, Robbie Keane, Mark Viduka, Alan Smith, Harry Kewell and Jonathan Woodgate to name a few.

Domestically, United didn’t finish lower than fourth between the 1998-99 and 2000-01 Premier League seasons and, looking back, Bowyer says he is still amazed at how he and his former team-mates didn’t achieve more.

“My biggest regret is that we never won anything,” he told LUTV. “To this day I still can’t believe we never won anything. On our day we were unplayable and we proved that not only in England but Europe as well.”

Financial issues saw the Yorkshire giants go into administration in 2004 and oblivion seemed on the cards, but the club was saved in March 2004 – two months before they were relegated from the Premier League.

Leeds haven’t graced the top-flight since that year, but Thomas Christiansen’s side are only five points adrift of the playoff spots in the Championship at the moment.
