Liverpool have issued a real statement of intent by splashing out £75 million on defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman was wanted by Liverpool all summer, and the Reds have finally got their man, even if they are paying a fee which many consider to be over the odds.

The £75 million fee is a world record amount for a defender, who now has to live up to the fee.

Virgil van Dijk of Southampton gesutres during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Southampton at Selhurst Park on September 16, 2017 in London, England.

Former Premier League ace and ex-England international Ledley King has backed Liverpool’s decision to spend the money on the centre-back, but warned Van Dijk he now has to deliver.

Van Dijk has had a difficult season so far for Southampton, and will have to lift his game now he has joined Liverpool.

There will be closer scrutiny on his performances, and by playing in the Champions League he will be tested at a completely new level.

Liverpool have done their bit by spending on Van Dijk and addressing a problem in their defence, although perhaps expecting him to single handedly solve their issues may be asking a bit too much.
