The Spurs legend spoke ahead of Sunday’s Under-18s Premier League fixture with Southampton.
Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King has spoken out about the club’s new stadium and the decision for the Spurs Under-18s to be first to play within its surroundings.
Much attention has been given to Spurs’ Premier League game against Crystal Palace on 3 April, the first competitive senior game, which will come complete with an opening ceremony.
However, the game going ahead will be dependent on Tottenham achieving a formal safety certificate during two test events to be held with increasing levels of attendances.
Therefore, the honour of becoming the first Lilywhites side to play in the new ground will belong to the Under-18s as they host Southampton in an U18 Premier League fixture on Sunday, a game expected to be viewed by approximately 30,000 spectators.
Speaking to the official Tottenham website, he was excited for the new crop of academy players following the opportunity presented to them, and believes that it will be something they will never forget.
“For these young players, this new stadium will be the same as White Hart Lane was to me,” said King. “I watched great players grace the pitch and dreamed of being out there. These lads will do the same. They will dream of playing here in the future.
“The support we all received from the Spurs fans back then and the support our fans will now give these academy players is fantastic and will give them an extra step on the day. Just think, the first match at the new stadium, playing in front of all those fans… wow. It’s an unbelievable occasion and something the players will remember for the rest of their lives.”
Following the Under-18s game, a Tottenham legends team coached by Gary Mabbutt and Clive Allen is due to take on their Inter Milan counterparts on 30 March in front of a crowd of around 45,000.
