Ledley King backs Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane to return to his best after Euro 2016 disappointment

The former Spurs captain does not believe Kane will struggle this season despite a poor tournament this summer.

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Ledley King has told Press Association Sport, via the Daily Mail, that he does not believe Harry Kane will have any trouble in getting back to his best despite a relatively poor Euro 2016.

Kane did not score in any of his three appearances for the Three Lions in France this summer and often looked a shadow of the man who won the Premier League golden boot last season.

The striker, starting the tournament as Roy Hodgson’s first-choice striker, barely posed a threat against Russia or Wales in the group stages before being dropped in favour of Daniel Sturridge, and again struggled to make an impact upon his recall for the disastrous last-16 defeat to Iceland.

However, King has no qualms over Kane’s form for Spurs in the coming campaign, and insists that the young striker will once again prove his doubters wrong when he returns to domestic action next month.

The former Spurs skipper told PA Sport, as quoted by the Daily Mail: “I’m entirely confident in Harry getting back to his best. He’s the kind of player who doesn’t seem to suffer from a lack of confidence, he always has the utmost confidence in his ability to score goals.

“It wasn’t a tournament where he was missing lots of chances, he just wasn’t able to find the positions that he normally does. I’ve got no worries for Harry, he’ll be back, he’ll be hungrier as a result and he’ll be looking to prove people wrong again.

“He did that last season when people were asking if he was going to be a one-off and he can do it again. When you’re young you’re going to have games and spells where you’re not scoring or playing so well. When you’re young people question your ability more. When you do receive criticism, it motivates you to come back stronger.”

As alluded to by King, Kane has a history of responding to his critics after being dubbed a “one-season wonder” by some after his 31-goal breakthrough season in 2014-15.

The 22-year-old improved upon his Premier League tally last term, netting 25 times in 38 games to become the first English top scorer in a top-flight season since Kevin Phillips in 1999-2000.
