Tottenham Hotspur’s European campaign is over after a 2-2 draw with Gent on Thursday evening, with the Belgians going through 3-2 on aggregate.

Spurs endured a nightmare in Belgium last week as Jeremy Perbet’s goal handed Gent a 1-0 win, leaving Mauricio Pochettino’s men with plenty of work to do at Wembley Stadium.

After a 3-0 FA Cup win over Fulham on Sunday, fans were in buoyant mood ahead of Thursday’s clash, and Christian Eriksen put Spurs in front in the first half to put Tottenham back in the driving seat.

However, Harry Kane then put through his own net to give Gent a priceless away goal, and Dele Alli was given a straight red card for a terrible challenge on Brecht Dejaegere.

Tottenham were given hope when Victor Wanyama found the net, but as Spurs pushed forward to get the vital goal to go through to the last 16, they were caught on the counter and Perbet found the net again to make it 2-2, sending Gent through 3-2 on aggregate.

Thursday’s defeat ends Tottenham’s European campaign for this season, capping off a miserable continental adventure having also crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage, with just one win at Wembley this season – a major concern given that Spurs will play all home games at Wembley next term.

After the final whistle, former Spurs defender Ledley King took to Twitter to give his reaction, suggesting that whilst the second half effort was good, the performance over two legs simply wasn’t up to scratch.

Former chairman Lord Sugar also took to Twitter to suggest that he was very disappointed that Tottenham are out, noting that Spurs’ performance once again dipped at Wembley.
