LeBron James potentially signing with the Philadelphia 76ers isn’t an idea that NBA legend Paul Pierce can get behind.
James is in the midst of a historic free agency, as his next contract will guarantee he returns for a record-shattering 24th NBA season.
With multiple contenders around the NBA eyeing LeBron’s services, the 76ers are looking to be among the frontrunners to land James’ signature. But not everyone loves that idea.
LeBron James might hurt his legacy by joining the 76ers
On the latest episode of the NFG Show with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, Pierce made it clear that he thinks LeBron’s legacy will be negatively impacted by a stint as the fourth option on the title-favorite 76ers.
“No player that we consider that’s been in a GOAT debate has been a fourth option. No, seriously. Like Jordan, even when he went to the Wizards, he was still the first option. Kareem was the second option with Magic.”
“Like when we start having these debates about the GOAT, and we say, we’ll, you know, Philly won a championship, but he was the fourth option. He has five rings, but one as a fourth and fifth option, like so, it’ll do something to his legacy. I really believe that.”
This is a unique take, as everyone’s been assuming James will strategically pick a team to maximize his chances at a title while minimizing the load he has to carry.
James has earned that right as a 41-year-old who has played 23 NBA seasons at an All-Star level, but Pierce’s statement makes it clear that experts might look back on a potential decision to join the 76ers negatively.
Which destinations might impact LeBron James’ career legacy
The best destination from a legacy and competitive standpoint would be returning to either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Miami Heat.
Those are two destinations he’s already familiar with and has won a title with, so another title with either franchise will only boost his legacy since they haven’t won in the decade since he left.

The 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves present the best win-now options, which might be considered an attempt at ring-chasing, which would upset fans.
Similarly, joining the Golden State Warriors will upset fans because of his long-standing rivalry with that franchise and Steph Curry.
LeBron’s decision will be focused on his immediate happiness, not how it might impact what others think of him. If that choice takes him to Philly or Golden State, experts like Pierce will have to make their peace with it.
