Derby County scored five goals at home, and still lost, in a thrilling League Cup encounter last night.

Tickets for this match were as little as £15 for adults and £8 for under 18s, and all fans leaving Pride Park last night can say they got more than their money’s worth from this 10 goal thriller.

For the home support it was all for nothing, as they slipped to a quite improbable defeat.

Derby went in at half-time leading 3-0 through goals from Richard Keogh, Jake Buxton and Theo Robinson. When Scunthorpe pulled a goal back early in the second half through Andy Barcham, County hit straight back a minute later with Buxton netting his second and returning their three goal advantage to lead 4-1.

Buxton had a standout evening, with three assists on top of his two goals. Mike Grella then made it 4-2, before Theo Robinson missed a penalty for the Rams, a sign of things to come.

Bobby Grant looked to have brought the Irons back into it at 4-3 with 20 minutes to go, only for Nathan Tyson to extend the lead again to 5-3 in the 83rd minute.

Scunthorpe did not give in, with substitute Connor Jennings who had only been on six minutes, netted in stoppage time, before Grant scored a memorable equaliser moments after to make it 5-5 in the eighth minute of injury time after the referee awarded a penalty, and take the game to extra time.

Somewhat astoundingly but perhaps inevitably, the goals dried up in extra time, and the game went to penalties. Ultimately it was Scunthorpe who prevailed 7-6 on penalties, sending their visiting support wild, capping an unforgettable game.

The League One side travel to Crawley Town at the weekend who also claimed a Championship scalp of their own, knocking Millwall out at The Den on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Derby meanwhile kick off their season with a home match against Sheffield Wednesday. They will have to take the positives from this game, which there were many offensively, and hope the disappointment of the manner of the defeat does not affect them in the league.
