The USA lost 1-0 to Germany in Recife but booked their place in the round of 16 regardless because of their superior goal difference. Here are the ratings:

Tim Howard – 7 – The Everton goalkeeper was there when called upon, and couldn’t do anything about the goal as Thomas Muller planted an excellent shot into the corner.

Fabian Johnson – 7 – Not as effective as in previous games but was comfortable defensively and put in so much energy as always.

Omar Gonzalez – 8 – Gonzalez was excellent in his first World Cup start and defended brilliantly against a strong German side. The LA Galaxy centre-back deserves to keep his place in the starting lineup for their next game.

Matt Besler – 7 – Another solid display from Besler who is proving himself to be a reliable defender at the heart of the USA defence.

DaMarcus Beasley – 6 – Looked relatively good but couldn’t offer enough going forward and was unable to stretch the German defence.

Kyle Beckerman – 6 – As tough as ever in the middle of the park but couldn’t win the battle against Bastian Schweinsteiger and was overrun as a result.

Jermaine Jones – 7 – Put in another highly energetic display but wasn’t able to make the difference when it mattered in the final third.

Graham Zusi – 6 – Couldn’t offer the killer pass when his side needed it but put a shift in for his side as always.

Michael Bradley – 7 – Better performance from the Toronto FC man but his first touch has been poor throughout the tournament and ruins some great positional play.

Brad Davis – 6 – Largely ineffective but covered plenty of ground.

Clint Dempsey – 6 – Didn’t see much of the ball and was unable to score in his third consecutive game of the World Cup despite a good late chance.

SUBSTITUTES

Alejandro Bedoya – 6 – Couldn’t inject pace into the game when sent on and was lucky not to be booked for a swipe at Schweinsteiger within seconds of coming on.

DeAndre Yedlin – 6 – Sent on to add some speed down the right but wasn’t on the pitch for long enough to make an impact.
