Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has reacted on Twitter to Virgil van Dijk’s account of his latter days at St Mary’s.

The Netherlands international, speaking to BBC Sport, said that he “gave everything” prior to his £75m move to Liverpool in January 2018.

Van Dijk’s comments haven’t gone down very well with some Saints fans given the animosity that came about between their club and the Reds over the whole saga.

The Merseyside outfit attempted to bring the centre-back to Anfield during the summer of 2017 but Saints reacted by reporting them for an illegal approach.

The defender later handed in a transfer request and reportedly refused to play for the team, staying beyond the summer and featuring just 12 more times before finally leaving the following January.

Few can argue that Van Dijk’s career hasn’t gone from strength to strength following his switch but, given he has now given an account of the saga which some are disputing, there hasn’t been a particularly good reaction from the south coast club faithful.
