Le Tissier suggests Southampton would have beaten Inter had Charlie Austin started

Southampton lost 1-0 against Italian giants Inter Milan on Thursday.

Former player and current pundit Matt Le Tissier has suggested that Southampton would have beaten Inter Milan on Thursday had Charlie Austin been in the starting XI, Sky Sports report.

The Saints’ Europa League bid took a minor setback on Thursday as they were defeated 1-0 by Italian giants Inter, yet the overall result was seemingly harsh on the brave visitors.

Southampton created numerous opportunites and had it not been for some wasteful finishing and some outstanding goalkeeping, they could well have recorded a famous victory.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead Southampton’s game against Manchester City, pundit Le Tissier feels his former side were unfortunate to lose and believes with Austin the result would have been diffrerent.

“They’ve just battered Inter Milan at the San Siro. If the Saints were 3-0 up at half-time it wouldn’t have been an unfair reflection on the performance,” Le Tissier explained.

“Jay Rodriguez missed a couple of chances and I think if Charlie Austin had been on the pitch it would’ve been a different story.”

Austin did manage to feature as he replaced the injured Shane Long after half-time, yet by then Inter had regrouped and they manage to restrict Southampton’s scoring chances in the second period.

The former Queens Park Rangers man has been in superb form for Claude Puel’s men this season, scoring an impressive seven goals in nine matches in all competitions.

The Saints face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this weekend, and considering the form of the two sides it would not be a surprise to see the South Coast club cause Pep Guardiola’s men some problems.
