Hughes is expected to be named Southampton boss by some media outlets.
Former Southampton favourite Matt Le Tissier has ruled himself out of the running to succeed Mauricio Pellegrino at St Mary’s.
Pellegrino was sacked on Monday night after a run of one win in 17 Premier League matches to leave them only a point and a place above the bottom three.
Asked by Talksport on Tuesday if he would be interested in succeeding the Argentine, Le Tissier – who spent his entire professional career with the Saints before switching to a career in the media – replied: “No! Not with my lack of coaching knowledge.
“It’s not a position I’ve ever really coveted. I’m quite happy doing the job I’m doing.”
Former top flight bosses Mark Hughes, Slaven Bilic and Marco Silva are among the early favourites to take the Southampton position, with Hughes expected to be appointed within the next 24 hours according to the Mirror.
And the arrival of the Welshman – who played for the Saints alongside Le Tissier – is one the 49-year-old would seemingly welcome.
Le Tissier added: “There are all sorts of names being mentioned. Mark Hughes has a lot of Premier League experience and I think that would probably count in his favour.
“As far as the situation we are in at the moment, I think it makes sense to go with someone who has got Premier League experience – who doesn’t have to get to know a new set of players, you know, will have already known about the players he’s got at his disposal from playing against them.
“Marco Silva had a good impact at clubs in the first moments that he went there.
“There are lots of names being bandied about that you would say could fit the job, but at the end of the day it’s down to the board to decide who they think is best, not just for these eight games, but I’d like to think that they’d make an appointment that would be a little bit more longer term than that.”
According to the Times, Silva is close to agreeing a two-year contract with Benfica, worth £1.8 million a season, meaning Southampton may have to move fast if they want to pursue the Portuguese coach.
