Le Tissier maintains he would be an asset to this Southampton side.

Former Premier League ace Matt Le Tissier watched on in delight as former club Southampton booked a trip to Wembley by reaching the EFL Cup Final last night.

Southampton won 1-0 at Anfield to seal a 2-0 aggregate win over Liverpool, a decisive victory for Claude Puel’s men.

The Saints were both resilient and clinical, keeping a clean sheet despite missing star defender Virgil van Dijk through injury.

Le Tissier was goaded after the game by a Liverpool supporter who claimed that despite his majestic brilliance as a player, he would not have got into this Southampton team.

While perhaps a compliment to the effectiveness of Puel’s side, Le Tissier gave the suggestion short shrift, responding as decisively as one of his famous long range shots.

Le Tissier scored more than 160 goals for Southampton during his career, including two seasons in the Premier League when he reached or surpassed the 20 goal barrier.

This Southampton team currently have scored just 22 goals in 22 league matches this season, just two more than bottom side Sunderland, with Charlie Austin their top marksman with six goals.
