Southampton manager Ronald Koeman believes that Nathaniel Clyne deserves an England call-up after his fine run of performances this season.
Clyne has started the season in great form, and Ronald Koeman feels he deserves a chance with England after his stunning long-range strike helped Southampton beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.
The 23-year-old has played every minute of the Saints impressive campaign so far, and also netted the side’s first goal of the season in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool on the opening weekend.
Koeman said: “I think he’s ready. He has a lot of experience, he has been playing very well since the beginning of the season.
“He scored a great goal. I think his performance was very good and I think it’s an option for the national coach,” he is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.
“I’m very happy to have Clyney in our team, because he brings a lot of experience, he brings a lot of spirit and I like to have and I like to play with offensive full-back.
“He shows that quality and it’s very important for the team.”
Roy Hodgson isn’t spoiled for choice at right-back as Kyle Walker and Glen Johnson remain sidelined through injury.
Everton’s John Stones played on the right side of defence in the last round of matches, but Hodgson sees the youngster as more of a centre-back, and so Clyne may get his chance to impress next month.
Hodgson must select his next squad for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia in a couple of weeks, and Clyne will be hoping he has done enough to earn a place in the side.
