Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez says he is already afraid of being sacked after just a few games in charge of the club. What would it mean for Chelsea if he went before the New Year?
Chelsea are yet to win a game under new manager Rafa Benitez and they have scored only one league goal. A poor performance in the Champions League this week and he could well be out of the door before the New Year or even Christmas. If that happens it could have lasting damage on the club.
Other than Jose Mourinho, who has declared his love for Chelsea, it’s very difficult to see any high profile manager taking charge of Chelsea if Benitez is given the boot. Considering the way that Roman Abramovich has conducted his business as far as managers are concerned, it could be a bit of a lottery as to how long Benitez is in charge for.
If he is sacked then Chelsea can wave goodbye to the rest of the season, they are already way off the pace in the Premier League having led through the first few weeks. If they go out of the Champions League then there only real option of silverware comes domestically where anything can happen.
“No. I am not 100 per cent (certain over his future). We didn’t win today – that is the main thing. I would say it depends on the things that we can do on the pitch. So if we improve on the pitch, it will be easier for everyone,” Benitez said after the defeat to West Ham at the weekend.
Chelsea have to be very careful because it’s clear they are holding out to try and sign Pep Guardiola as manager in the summer. However, reports coming from Spain have already suggested that Guardiola will ignore any approach from Chelsea because he is not sure that the club will give him the time, in terms of years, to develop the side as he wishes.
He can hardly be blamed because Di Matteo was sacked after winning the Champions League, with the club four points off the lead in the Premier League and with a slim chance of still making the knock out phase of the Champions League which would mean a great chance at retaining their title.
Benitez is in a very difficult position because he has been offered a good deal until the end of the season. The fans don’t want him at the club which means unless the side starts winning games, the pressure is only going to build and it could reach breaking point which may leave Chelsea with a sub-standard caretaker manager in an embarrassing situation until the end of the season.
