The retirement of Michael Owen means an end to an entertaining career, which took in Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Real Madrid. Here are five of his best goals for club and country.

Michael Owen will go down as one of the greatest ever strikers to have pulled on the three lions and represented this great country. He’s also notched up quite a few club goals and we’ve sifted through everything to find you some of the best.

That Goal Against Argentina

The goal Owen scored against Argentina at the World Cup in France, 1998, will probably be the goal that he’s forever remembered for.

It was the perfect illustration of his pace and skill, as he glided by Argentinean defenders, ignored Paul Scholes who was in a great position before rifling the ball into the top corner to send us all mad.

The Second Goal of his Hat-trick Against Germany

The 5-1 win away in Germany in 2001 is still the best result in living memory for several England fans and Owen bagged a hat-trick during the game.

His second goal was probably the best of the three as he had to position himself to strike over the top of the ball which had already gone higher than a comfortable level for him. It didn’t really matter because he cracked in a volley after the ball bounced with ease.

His Winner in the Manchester Derby

Owen scored the winning goal in the 4-3 win for Manchester United against Manchester city in September 2009.

What makes this one of his best goals is the fact the match was literally about to end, into the second minute of Fergie time (97th minute after five were added on) and the ball got absolutely thrashed into him, giving him pretty much no time to think about anything.

Winner in the 2001 FA Cup Final

Owen was never a huge player but he used what little strength he had to score the winner for Liverpool in the 2001 FA Cup final against Arsenal.

Wary of his pace, Tony Adams tried to bully him off the ball and failed, as he forced Owen onto his weaker left foot, he cracked a shot past David Seaman before he could do anything to stop it.

Goal Against Manchester United During the 1997/1998 Season

If ever there was a goal which demonstrated what Owen was about as a youngster, it was the goal he scored in this season against United at Old Trafford.

A seemingly safe situation ended in disaster because of a lightning burst of speed from Owen as the United defence had pushed far too high up the pitch. If you think Ronaldo and Messi are quick, this is something else.

What do you think is his best goal?
