United stars past and present have gathered for the grand unveiling of a statue in honour of Sir Alex Ferguson outside Old Trafford. Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Edwin van der Sar were among those to attend. The manager was naturally thrilled at the honour, saying: “It’s a really proud moment for me, normally people die before they have a statue. I’m outliving death!”
Wayne Rooney is set to return to the Manchester United squad for the home match against Queens Park Rangers. Rooney had been out of first team action with an ankle problem but he is set to return and reunite his partnership with Robin Van Persie in the United front line. Meanwhile opponents QPR will arrive without a boss, as former United striker Mark Hughes was sacked this morning. Harry Redknapp is expected to be appointed, but would not take charge of the first team until Monday.
Sir Alex Ferguson has taken a jab at new Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez. Ferguson has suggested that Benitez is lucky to be taking over a ready made side that could have two trophies in the bank without Benitez having to do anything in terms of building a team at the club.
