Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will not play in the club’s game against Braga in the Champions League. Ferdinand is set to be rested as he has played a higher number of games due to defensive injuries. The news means that Michael Carrick is likely to deputise again in the United defence.

Manchester United pair Darren Fletcher and Nick Powell have not trained ahead of the club’s Champions League match with Braga. They are both reported to be carrying slight knocks and are unlikely to feature against the Portuguese team. Defender Chris Smalling did train and may make the bench and has been included in the 20-man travelling squad.

Sir Alex Ferguson has set Manchester United the task of winning their Champions League group. United are preparing to face Sporting Braga who they beat 3-2 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford. Winning the group should give United a slightly more favourable last 16 tie ahead of the quarter-finals.

Manchester United are to unveil a statue of current manager Sir Alex Ferguson before the Premier League game against QPR. Ferguson is coming up to 26 years in charge of the club, a record which will probably never be broken. The statue will take pride of place outside Old Trafford as a tribute to one of the greatest ever managers.

Manchester United are said to be upping their interest in Blackpool midfielder Tom Ince according to reports. United have recently been linked with the Championship star and a move could now be likely after former manager Ian Holloway left the Tangerines to take charge of Crystal Palace.

Stoke City are set to offer defender Ryan Shawcross a six-year contract to keep him at the club. Recent reports have linked Shawcross with a move to Manchester United as a possible long term replacement for veteran defender Rio Ferdinand. Shawcross would return for his second spell at the club as United originally sold him to Stoke for £1 million.

Youngster Sean McGinty has become the latest player to leave the club on loan, with the 19-year-old defender signing a one-month deal with League One side Carlisle United.
