All of the latest news relating to the world of Liverpool football club rounded up and condensed into bite sized chunks.
Brendan Rodgers has admitted his delight at the fight and progress shown by his younger players after the 5-3 Europa League win away at Young Boys. Rodgers called the evening a ‘great night of pride’ for the club and for him personally as a manager. He believes it is the best way to prepare for a league clash against title contenders Manchester United this weekend.
Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey says he hopes his performance in the Europa League match against Young Boys has done him enough to earn a starting place for the league match against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday. Shelvey played a pivotal role in the second half of the game as Liverpool won 5-3 after trailing 3-2 and looking as though another loss was on the cards.
Liverpool are reported to be lining up a move for Athletic Bilbao and Spain striker Fernando Llorente when the transfer window opens in January. Llorente is thought to be high up on Brendan Rodgers’ list of targets having scored over 20 goals in each of his last three seasons in La Liga. Llorente has refused to state that he will be staying at his current club in 2013.
Liverpool will not be fined alongside Hearts after the Scottish club were ordered to pay £4,000 for the pitch invasion by fans at Anfield. Hearts fans spilled onto the pitch in the Europa League qualifying game after going 1-0 up late in the match. Luis Suarez equalised late on but it appears that Liverpool will not receive any punishment alongside the fine handed to the Scottish side.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has admitted his fears over the current system that manager Brendan Rodgers is trying to use at the club. The former shot stopper says the problem lies with the goalkeeper and the defence and has described Liverpool’s defending this season as ‘mayhem’ ahead of the Premier League clash against Manchester United.
Liverpool Managing Director Ian Ayre has said it does not matter if striker Luis Suarez and Manchester United defender Patrice Evra shake hands this weekend. Suarez was banned for eight games after being found guilty of racially abusing Evra last season. Ayre says that all fans, both Liverpool and United, should be unified for a brief period this weekend with focus and attention on justice for families of victims in the Hillsborough disaster.
Liverpool legend and former striker Robbie Fowler has suggested that Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra should unite in a floral tribute before the Premier League match on Sunday. The former Kop favourite has called for Suarez to lay a tribute to the Munich disaster at the United end while Evra could lay a tribute to the Hillsborough victims in front of the Kop. If it happens it would make for one tense start to the afternoon.
