Manchester United, Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa, Norwich City and Reading all feature.
Another Premier League weekend has come and gone and there is plenty of drama to talk about as always. Here are five clubs who benefited from their performances this weekend.
Manchester United
Manchester United were able to go to the top of the Premier League table because they beat Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford. They were aided by Chelsea’s inability to get a result away at Swansea and Manchester City’s failure to win away at West Ham United. Sir Alex Ferguson’s team are one point clear at the top of the table which is fortunate considering how they have played so far this season.
Wigan Athletic
Wigan pulled off a great win away at Tottenham Hotspur. They currently sit 13th in the table and the win put them six points clear of the bottom three places. This is the first season in the last two to three years where it has looked like Wigan are not going to be fighting all season long near the bottom of the table. They are now just three points away from a top half of the table position.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa secured their first away win of the season against Sunderland. The win put them on nine points, four clear of Reading who hold the first of the three relegation places. Villa have been under a lot of pressure from sections of their supporters and the win is an example of their inconsistency this season. A follow up win would move Villa into the group of teams near the top half of the table.
Norwich City
Norwich City managed to secure a 1-0 win at home against Stoke City in a match that many would have expected them to lose. Norwich are now on ten points, just one point behind Liverpool and three points behind Newcastle United. It was their second home win of the season which goes with two draws and only one defeat. This suggests their home form will see them into the top ten.
Reading
Reading drew 1-1 away at Queens Park Rangers, a match they would have been targeting for a win. However, it was Reading’s second draw away from home, this will give them confidence that they can dig in over tough away fixtures for the rest of the season. Reading are four points from safety and in better shape then QPR or Southampton.
