Liverpool released Lazar Markovic in January but he made just one Premier League appearance after joining Fulham in January.
It just gets worse and worse for Lazar Markovic.
Five years after Liverpool paid £20 million for a player who was once seen as the Balkan’s answer to Lionel Messi, Markovic has surely sealed his place alongside Andriy Voronin, Christian Poulsen and co as one of the most disappointing signings in the club’s recent history.
In half a decade as a Liverpool player, the Serbian winger made just 19 Premier League appearances, spending most of his time out on loan at Hull City, Sporting Lisbon, Anderlecht and Fenerbahce.
So few were surprised when Jurgen Klopp, who had not handed Markovic a single appearance since he took over at Anfield, decided to release the 25-year-old on the final day of the January transfer window.
A move to struggling Fulham was supposed to represent a fresh start for a player who was crying out for a new lease of life. But, like almost everything else that has happened to him in the last few years, that spell at Craven Cottage quickly became a nightmare.
Markovic made just one appearance as Fulham were relegated from the Premier League as early as April.
And, according to Voetbal Krant, he is now set to be released for the second time in just five months. Fulham apparently have ‘no intention’ of extending a contract that is due to expire in the very near future.
So it’s fair to say Markovic has spectacularly squandered his last chance to prove that he is a Premier League player after all.
