According to a recent report from Goal.com, Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic is considering an approach from Newcastle United as he bids to get his career back on track.

The Serbian international arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2014 after developing quite the reputation in Portugal, where he featured 49 times despite joining from Partizan Belgrade as a teenager.

In his one and only year at Benfica he helped them secure the league title, scoring some sublime efforts and befuddling opponents time and again with his innate ability.

Such was his reputation that he was allegedly trailed by the great and the good of the game and it was ultimately Liverpool who signed him for £20million.

However, two years on Markovic is yet to live up to that price tag and it seems he has now been deemed surplus to requirements by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Goal.com is now reporting that the 22-year-old could join Newcastle, either on loan or in a permanent deal with Klopp looking for around £16million, and while that would be a significant outlay for the Magpies, a temporary deal with the option to sign long-term in 12 months could suit all parties.

Markovic has the talent to be a success in England; now he needs a place to feature regularly and a manager who has faith in him and the nous and patience to develop the lesser parts of his game, most notably his confidence in front of goal.

With his Serbian teammate Aleksandar Mitrovic already at St James’ Park, Markovic could develop a successful long-term partnership for both club and country if he joins Newcastle this summer. And while he has not flourished at Anfield, those who saw him in Portugal will know he could become a Magpies superstar if they get their man.
