You could argue that Celtic’s failure to get 10-in-a-row over the line this season has stemmed from some quite shoddy recruitment in the post-Brendan Rodgers era in Glasgow.
Since Rodgers quit Celtic over two years ago, the recruitment just hasn’t been good enough and Patryk Klimala represents their failures on that front pretty well.
The Hoops, who are 20 points behind newly-crowned Premiership champions Rangers, spent £3.5 million on brinigng the young Polish hitman in January of 2020.
Fast forward 18 months and Klimala has managed only three goals in 28 games for the Bhoys across all competitions.
Peter Lawwell is leaving his long-time role as Celtic’s chief executive at the end of this season, but he is reportedly about to oversee one final piece of very decent business before he goes.
That’s because The Scottish Sun has reported that Klimala is on the brink of joining New York Red Bulls and has already jetted out to the Big Apple.
But the good news is that despite being a flop in Scotland, Celtic won’t lose money because the report added that they will receive £3.5 million in transfer fee.
In other words, Lawwell will help the club break even and that has to be a bonus when you consider that Klimala hasn’t looked anything like a £3.5 million player in Scotland.
It isn’t huge money but remember, Celtic’s all-time record transfer fee paid out is £9 million [for Odsonne Edouard] so it isn’t peanuts either, but it looks like the financial damage sustained from the 22-year-old will be null if the figures are right.
