Speaking to OTB, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Caoimhin Kelleher’s future and Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation.
The Irishman is certainly the man of the moment at Liverpool. He put in a brilliant performance against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final and he even scored the vital penalty at the end of the shootout.
However, inevitably, after the number two’s heroics, there has been plenty of discussion about his future at Anfield and whether or not he’ll look to leave Merseyside to find more first-team football.
Lawrenson believes that Liverpool, quite simply, have to keep the 23-year-old due to the fact Adrian simply isn’t up to the task of being the Reds’ back-up goalkeeper.
What’s been said?
Lawrenson discussed Kelleher’s future.
“He’s still young obviously, everybody likes him and he knows everybody likes him. He must love it at the football club, but I get the fact that you might want him to go to the Championship and get battered by the crosses and the corners and that kind of stuff, but I can’t see the manager, unless he got another outstanding number two, I don’t think he would ever loan him out. I mean Adrian, just no, so that’s why you have to keep him with the first team,” Lawrenson said.

Can’t let him go
Kelleher’s role as Liverpool’s number two may not be ideal for the Irishman, but he’s so perfect for the Reds.
He’s a safe pair of hands to play in these cup competitions, and if the Merseyside club had to call upon Adrian instead, it’s fair to say that they never would have made the Carabao Cup final.
Just look at how Adrian let Liverpool down in the Champions League in 2020. There’s a reason the Spaniard has only appeared once this season back in October against Preston.
Kelleher isn’t the Reds’ most important player, but he’s a vital cog as Liverpool continue to battle on all fronts.
