Lawrence Stroll may have already blown a significant amount of money on Aston Martin’s Formula 1 team in his quest to make them title contenders.

The team made their return to the grid in their current form at the start of the 2021 season, taking over from Racing Point.

Lance Stroll has been with them since day one, helped by his father’s strong presence within the organisation.

He was joined by two world champions as teammates, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, with the latter delivering their best-ever season with seven podiums in 2023.

Since then, though, things haven’t gone as well. The team has struggled to reach those heights again, even though the expectation was that things would turn around with Adrian Newey on board.

What mistakes has Lawrence Stroll made at Aston Martin?

Journalist Mark Hughes pointed out that it started when they tried to change too much at once rather than building on what had worked well before. And even with all that spending, Aston Martin are still stuck in the midfield, without any real sign of progress.

For all of Lawrence Stroll’s investments and efforts behind the scenes to bring in big names like Eric Blandin and Dan Fallows and push for new innovations, there hasn’t been much improvement on track.

The AMR24 showed promise early on but has since fallen back into familiar territory near P8-P10 finishes under Alonso’s driving. And there isn’t much hope of a turnaround soon either.

Lawrence Stroll’s spending on Aston Martin reportedly exceeds expectations

Speaking on the Motor Sport Magazine Podcast, Hughes described Stroll’s mindset following a tough start to 2026: “I think he’s been crossed many times and he’s probably spent more money than he envisaged by probably a factor of five or six.

“Every time he’s invested, he found a new limitation, and so he’s invested more, invested more and recruited new people, etc, etc.

“So it’s easy to mock when someone comes in from the outside, a successful businessman from outside the sport comes in and declares his ambition in this way.

“We’re seeing the growing pains of that, really. So, in terms of whether he will get so crushed that he just throws the whole thing up in the air and leaves? I don’t think so because I mean, I’m sure he feels like that at times, and he probably felt like that a lot in Bahrain testing, but I mean you’d be turning your back on all the investment that you’d made and letting someone else pick up the glory when it finally comes good. So no, he’s a smart cook. He won’t be doing that.”

Lawrence Stroll’s investment in Aston Martin remains significant despite slow progress

Despite early hopes, Aston Martin’s current outlook is far from promising. They’re expected to spend the next few years battling it out with Cadillac rather than climbing up the grid. But behind the scenes, Stroll has poured significant resources into building a foundation that could eventually pay off.

Beyond high-profile hires like Adrian Newey and Enrico Cardile, the team’s overall infrastructure has taken real steps forward.

The construction of a new wind tunnel stands out as a major step, allowing them to move away from relying on Mercedes’ facilities and focus more on their own development path.

There are also reports that Stroll provided financial support to Honda earlier this year when they were struggling to keep pace with competitors.

This isn’t someone who’s just playing at ownership – Stroll clearly wants Aston Martin to become a title contender one day.

Still, as rumours of this being a ‘10-year project’ start to surface, there will be increasing pressure on others within the organisation to match his level of commitment.
