Caolan Lavery swapped Sheffield Wednesday for Sheffield United last year.
Ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward Caolan Lavery in action
Sheffield United have gathered quite a collection of ex-Sheffield Wednesday players over the past few years, with Leon Clarke and Caolan Lavery – signed from the Owls last summer – the last two standing.
And as the Blades prepare for their first Championship season in six, there’s a small change they could again look to their rivals for new recruits.
Whichever division Wednesday are in, their squad of 30-plus could do with a cull, and they are likely to oblige for the right player and price.
And with three United’s central midfielders out of contract, Wednesday’s Lewis McGugan is one who could be of interest to the Blades.
A fans’ favourite following an impressive loan spell two seasons ago, McGugan’s face simply hasn’t fit under Carlos Carvalhal, who transfer listed the 28-year-old, took away his squad number and excluded him from his plans at the start of the campaign.
Even as a bit part player, McGugan managed an impressive six goals in 17 appearances last season and he perhaps deserves better than to see out the final 12 months of his contract in the doldrums at Hillsborough.

The former England Under-21 international’s contract situation means he’s unlikely to cost the earth, although his wages demands could be a stumbling block should United make an approach.
And if they do, even the most ardent of Wednesday fan would find it hard to begrudge him a move to Bramall Lane – as was the case with Lavery.
Should Sheffield United make a move for Sheffield Wednesday’s Lewis McGugan this summer?
