The man Jose Mourinho once described as his “eyes and ears” is a surprise new name on Sky Bet’s list of contenders to succeed Harry Redknapp at Birmingham City.

Andre Villas Boas, who was part of the Manchester United boss’s staff at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan before embarking on a managerial career of his own, is now 16/1 to take the St Andrew’s gig, having not previously featured on the market.

The 39-year-old left Shanghai SIPG earlier this year, following spells at Zenit St Petersburg, Tottenham, Chelsea, Porto and Academica.

While another manager who recently left his Chinese post, Gus Poyet – formerly of Shanghai Shenhua – is slightly ahead of Villas Boas at 14/1 with Sky Bet.

Aitor Karanka (7/4) remains the front runner, however, with Lee Carsley (3/1) and Steve Cotterill (4/1) also occupying short odds.

Nigel Adkins (6/1), Alan Pardew (8/1) and Steve McClaren (12/1) are next on the list, above Poyet, Villas Boas, David Moyes and Nigel Pearson (both also 16/1).
