Sheffield Wednesday are again being tipped to add to their attack this month.
It is a year since Sheffield Wednesday were said to be pondering a move for Patrick Bamford, after the Chelsea striker cut short his loan spell at Crystal Palace [Sheffield Star].
In the end, he moved to Norwich on another temporary deal but, 12 months on, finds himself in a similar predicament, having failed to make an impact at Burnley. Again, Wednesday are being tipped by their local paper to sign a new front man.
More likely than not, Bamford will be heading back to the Championship if his loan to Burnley is terminated this month – as seems to be the case, according to ESPN – and the 23-year-old would be perfect for the Owls.
Bamford has excelled in the second tier, where he has scored 25 goals and created another eight in 61 appearances and was the divisional player of the year in 2015, while his ability to play in a variety of attacking roles is sure to appeal to Wednesday head coach Carvalhal.
Bamford scored 19 goals for Middlesbrough two seasons ago
With financial fair play hindering the Portuguese’s transfer plans – and perhaps putting paid to the Owls’ interest in Middlesbrough’s Jordan Rhodes, who will surely sign for Aston Villa now Rudy Gestede has moved in the opposite direction – quality loan signings are likely to feature highly on his agenda, as the recent acquisition of Callum McManaman suggests.
Bamford is likely to have plenty of suitors should he become available – not least former boss Steve McClaren at Derby County, especially if the Rams miss out on Rhodes – but Wednesday’s long-term interest could still count for something, were they to move for Bamford this month.
Wednesday could do with some Wickham-like inspiration in the second half of the campaign
With any luck, the England Under-21 international would have a similar impact to that of Connor Wickham at Hillsborough – another player in that too-good-for-the-Championship-but-not-quite-trusted-at-Premier-League-level bracket.
