The Dutch-born South African flopped at Forest and has struggled in Belgium.

This summer Nottingham Forest were facing a predicament regarding their striker Lars Veldwijk. The South African international made life difficult for Forest after an excellent season on loan at PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie – after failing to score a single goal in his first season with Forest.

He netted 14 goals in 35 appearances for the Dutch club. He eventually did score his first goal for Forest in an EFL Cup win against Millwall earlier this season and it looked like he might get another chance at Forest.

But, a week later, he joined Belgian side KV Kortrijk on a free transfer.

This week he has been speaking about his first season in Belgium, which has not gone to plan. Veldwijk has played just nine times for the club, scoring once in a 5-1 loss. Speaking to Kick Off in South Africa he admitted the season had not gone to plan and that he may consider his future at the club:

“I haven’t played many games at my club, I only played two or three games this season, so it has been a little difficult.

“But I’m happy that I got a call-up (for South Africa) to try and show in training what I can do – that’s good enough for me.

“Yes, I hope in June. I’m still under contract but yes (I have a few offers to consider).”

There is no doubt that Forest will feel justified in their decision to let the player go in the summer, based on his performances in Belgium.

The player himself would have felt a move to Belgium was a fresh start but it has arguably been worse than his spell at Forest.

Hopefully he can find a team where he is appreciated in the near future.
