Fans of the Premier League have voted Manchester United’s David de Gea over Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois as the division’s top goalkeeper

Manchester United’s David de Gea has been voted as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League with an incredible 72% of www.premierleague.com readers votes.

Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois came second with 12% of the votes, while there was a shock in third as ex-Arsenal keeper Lukasz Fabianski, now of Swansea City, earned more votes (10%) than Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris (3%) and Manchester City’s Joe Hart (3%).

Given the form the Spaniard is currently in, it can be no surprise the United keeper came out on top. However, the huge difference in the votes – between De Gea and anyone else – can.

At the weekend, the 24-year-old put in arguably the best performance of any goalkeeper in the Premier League this season against Liverpool and helped the Red Devils on to a very impressive 3-0 win – the club’s sixth consecutive victory in the Premier League.

After the match, the plaudits rained in on the former Atletico Madrid man, with teammate Juan Mata commenting on MUTV: ”it’s tough to find anyone better than him,” to which supporters of the Premier League clearly agree.

Despite the landslide in the votes, the statistics show that he difference between the five keepers selected isn’t a great deal and, if anything, shows that each of the keepers have their own strength.

For example, Fabianski has proven a formidable force in the air, successfully claiming the ball 41 times – 12 more than the next highest in Courtois. While, Hugo Lloris has proven far superior than any of his competitors with the accuracy of his goal kicks.

Nevertheless, nobody will argue that the five keepers nominated for the poll are having great seasons and all five are playing a huge role in their side’s current positioning in the table.
