Abel Hernandez’s Hull contract is expiring at the end of the season – and Leeds should consider a move for the striker.
It’s pretty clear what Leeds United fans want from director of football Victor Orta.
The transfer chief has come under fire recently with the majority of his imported additions struggling to settle in the Championship, contributing to a dismal run of six defeats in seven league games which has seen Leeds’ promising season crumble.
Supporters, then, are demanding players with Championship experience and proven quality in the second tier. Essentially, someone like Abel Hernandez.
The Hull Daily Mail reported last month that the Tigers striker is in the final year of his deal at the KCom Stadium and, in theory, could cost a fraction of his market value in January.
And Leeds should not let such an opportunity pass them by – even if Hernandez is still set for another four months on the sidelines with an Achilles injury.
Proven and prolific
When fit and firing, Hernandez is one of the most feared strikers in the Championship. His 20 goals in 2015/16 fired Hull to promotion via the play-offs. And the Uruguayan international started the current campaign in fine fettle too, netting three times in as many games before the injury struck.
It’s a strike rate the forwards at Leeds’ disposal can only dream of. Pierre-Michel Lasogga, the loan signing from Hamburg signed to replace reigning Golden Boot winner Chris Wood, has looked a little lost in recent games and the jury is still out on whether he suits English football.
Caleb Ekuban is both injured and unproven while Jay-Roy Grot is just 19 and is yet to start a single game.
Signing Hernandez in January would be a great way for Orta to get the Leeds fans back on side.
