Everton will not understand the full extent of the injury Nathan Patterson sustained while playing for Scotland until Tuesday. The defender had to be stretched off at Hampden Park.

That is according to the Daily Record, which reports Patterson will see a leading specialist on Tuesday. Everton are not expecting any updates on his situation before the right-back has seen the expert medic. He sustained the blow this Wednesday in the Nations League.

Patterson initially left the field under his own steam as Scotland took on Ukraine. But the £16m former Rangers talent soon required a stretcher and withdrew from Steve Clarke’s squad on Thursday. He also returned to the Toffees’ Finch Farm training ground for scans.

However, the initial examinations on his knee and ankle were inconclusive in determining his likely spell on the sidelines. There are also some concerns surrounding Patterson as it is the same ankle that he had operated on during this April after suffering a season-ending injury.

Patterson picked up his latest problem after landing awkwardly during Scotland’s 3-0 win over Ukraine. The 20-year-old initially walked off the pitch, but he soon needed a stretcher as Brentford defender Aaron Hickey came on for the 11-cap dynamo after just 26 minutes.

Lampard is facing an anxious wait as Everton send Patterson for scans on his injury

Everton coach Frank Lampard is now facing an anxious wait for news on Patterson’s injury as the Scotland defender heads for further tests. He will be loath to lose the full-back for a prolonged period, having emerged as the Toffees’ first-choice right-back so far this season.

Patterson has started all seven of the Goodison Park natives’ Premier League fixtures after capitalising on Seamus Coleman’s pre-season injury. The Glasgow native has proven to be one of the Toffees’ most promising attacking threats, whilst standing up defensively, too.

HITC Football has recently named Patterson in the top-10 of our Everton Power Rankings for the Premier League season so far in line with his performances. Lampard has also been full of praise for the defender and how he stood up to the Toffees boss’ change in tactics.

“What a start to the season,” Lampard said recently, via quotes by Football Scotland. “He was injured when he was about to make his debut last year, so it has been hard.

“But he has shown character. People say he’s a really good offensive full-back, but his defensive game has been excellent.

“It is hard on the full-backs when we switched to a back four because there are a lot more questions asked. But he has done great and he’s a young player, so he’s only going to get better.”
