Wolves have the funds to spend big. Should they pursue Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths?
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ league position of 18th is not exactly what their new owners had in mind when they took over in the summer.
A scattergun approach to spending and predictably unsuccessful hire of Walter Zenga has left the club in need of a reset this January, and they hope new manager Paul Lambert can get them going again.
No Wolves player has scored more than five goals this season, and a new striker is a necessity, which makes the prospect of re-signing former first team regular Leigh Griffiths an intriguing option.
Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths celebrates scoring their third goal
Celtic signed Griffiths from Wolves in 2014, and after a difficult start in Scotland he has proven to be a big success.
Last season he scored 40 goals in all competitions, but this campaign has been more difficult, losing his first team place to the younger and more dynamic Moussa Dembele.
While Dembele is attracting attention from clubs around Europe, Celtic are determined to hold onto him, which means potentially more time on the bench for Griffiths, with Celtic failing to click when they have tried playing both up front together.
Wolves manager Paul Lambert
Wolves manager Paul Lambert is a big fan of Griffiths, and made an enquiry over signing him for Aston Villa from Wolves back in 2014, The Metro reported at the time.
As a former Celtic regular and fan favourite, Lambert will be well aware of Griffiths’ success since then, and his current predicament.
Celtic would not want to let the 26-year-old leave easily, and may see him as vital insurance if Dembele leaves, but Wolves have the spending power to perhaps tempt Celtic to cash in, if they submit a sizeable offer.
