Jamie Carragher has written in The Telegraph that he cannot believe that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that signing Gakpo from PSV in the January transfer window was a mistake from Liverpool.
The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners brought in Gakpo from PSV last month.
The 23-year-old cost Liverpool £35 million in transfer fees (Sky Sports) and is earning £120,000 per week as salary (Football Insider).
The forward has not scored or given an assist in three Premier League matches for Liverpool so far.
Gakpo has also made three appearances in the FA Cup for the Reds.
Jamie Carragher on Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo
Carragher wrote: “In attack, Díaz started his Liverpool brilliantly but Núñez is a work in progress, and I am baffled watching Gakpo’s early performances.
“Gakpo is not a typical Klopp signing, lacking lightning pace and the capacity to lead a high press.
“Why commit up to £45 million on someone who will be on the bench when Díaz and Diogo Jota are fit?
“Especially when another area of the team needed strengthening?”

Staying patient
Like Jamie Carragher, many Liverpool fans will question why Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo when they had brought in Darwin Nunez last summer.
However, we should not forget that Gakpo is one of the best young forwards in Europe.
Roberto Firmino has not been at his best for a while now, and Mohamed Salah is not getting any younger.
True, Gakpo has not hit the ground running at Liverpool, but he is only 23 now and could develop in the coming years.
We may have to wait for the next year or two to truly see Gakpo blossom.
