Chelsea wonderkid Charly Musonda set the word alight at Real Betis – Celtic supporters will be hoping he can do the same if he arrives at Parkhead.
They say you should never forget where it all started. And Brendan Rodgers is obviously a firm believer in such a mantra.
A youth team coach at Chelsea at the start of his career, Rodgers has already reunited with former Stamford Bridge graduate Scott Sinclair north of the border at Celtic. And it appears that the Northern Irishman will not stop there.
The Daily Mail reports that teenage striker and contract rebel Dominic Solanke is on the club’s radar – as is quick-footed wideman Charly Musonda. Though Celtic supporters should not get hung up on the fact that the latter is yet to make his senior bow in Chelsea colours.
Musonda may have only played 24 league games in his burgeoning career but a short-term loan spell at Real Betis in the second half of last season was more than enough to confirm that the Belgian Under-21 international surely won’t look out of place alongside compatriots Eden Hazard, Yannick Carrasco and Kevin De Bruyne sooner rather than later.
Although Musonda produced only one goal and one assist in 16 appearances for the Andalusian giants, it would be unfair to boil his game down to bare statistics. The 20-year-old was not a bonafide fans favourite at Betis for nothing, his mesmeric dribbling ability and maturity in the final third making him central to almost every attack.
It wasn’t long before supporters were arriving at the Benito Villamarin with Musonda face masks in homage to their new found hero. In fact, just a couple of appearances into his spell in La Liga, he was already being tipped for full international honours.
‘I wish we had the option to buy him, he is fantastic,” then Betis boss Juan Merino lamented, as reported by the Daily Mail.
It’s fair to say Celtic supporters should get excited about Musonda’s possible arrival.
