LA Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney has praised Tony Alfaro’s qualities after the New York City FC defender was traded to the Golden State franchise.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Vanney lauded the 30-year-old defender for his ability to play numerous defensive roles having played six seasons of MLS football with the likes of NYCFC, DC United and the Seattle Sounders, as well as spending time in Mexico with Chivas Guadalajara.

Vanney said on Alfaro: “We are pleased to welcome Tony to the LA Galaxy. Tony’s qualities as a player, his experience within MLS and his flexibility to play different roles along the backline will be an important addition to our team. We look forward to quickly integrating him into the group.”

With the Galaxy looking to add to their defense after a resurgent run of form, Alfaro’s MLS experience could be a valuable asset for the LA-based franchise, with the 30-year-old capable of playing as a centre-back or left-back for Vanney’s side.

Indeed, the Galaxy’s form in recent games has suggested that the team have taken a turn for the better heading into the final matches of the regular season. And adding some defensive reinforcements in the form of Alfaro could be a smart decision in the long-run for Vanney.

13 games separate the Galaxy from a post-season appearance or another year of disappointment. And whilst the odds are still stacked against the MLS giants, Alfaro’s trade to California could help Vanney and his team get across the line in the final matches of the campaign.

As we know, Alfaro has experience in MLS and will add some much-needed steel to a Galaxy side that have finally found their attacking rhythm. And the Mexican defender could play an unlikely role in pushing Vanney and his team to the post-season.
