Jose Mourinho has been Tottenham Hotspur boss for close to 18 months and if we’re honest, he isn’t proving that much of an upgrade on Mauricio Pochettino – and comments by Kylian Mbappe might sadden some fans of the North London club.
Pochettino is now Paris Saint-Germain’s head coach after being sacked by Tottenham in November of 2019.
And comments by the PSG hitman might make some Spurs fans a little sad.
The French giants beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in Germany this week to put one foot in the semi-final of the Champions League, and Mbappe, who scored twice, has detailed how Pochettino’s tactical nous made the victory possible.
He said after the game via GFFN: “The coach wanted me to close the passing lines on Kimmich with Neymar and that I run deep to overcome the Bayern block and make them run because they don’t like that. It worked well today.”
Since replacing Pochettino, Mourinho has done a decent job but his tactics are quite often called into question by Lilywhites fans and Mbappe’s comments might remind the fanbase what they’re missing with the Argentine.
Having led Tottenham to a Champions League final in 2019, Pochettino is still and will always be revered by a lot of Spurs supporters and they won’t be surprised in the least that his tactics are helping get the very best out of Mbappe.
It must be pointed out that for all Pochettino’s impact in North London, he never won a trophy and Mourinho could end their 13-year wait for silverware this month by beating Manchester City in the League Cup final.
But the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan coach used to be one of the game’s very best tacticians and Mbappe’s praise for Pochettino could and should remind Tottenham fanatics that they too had a brilliant one once upon a time.
