He repaid Mauricio Pochettino with a man-of-the-match performance against Newcastle, and despite Trippier’s swift return, Tottenham did Walker-Peters a disservice by going out and spending £23 million to sign Serge Aurier.
Aurier’s arrival has hampered Walker-Peters’ playing time, meaning even when the team is rotated he is lucky to get on the bench.
He came on as a late substitute in midweek to score against Rochdale and scored his first goal for the club, offering a reminder that he should not be forgotten about.
It also shines a further spotlight onto underperforming signing Serge Aurier.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender has been inconsistent since he joined, and his form has nosedived over the past month.
His performance away to Juventus was widely panned by pundits and supporters, and against Crystal Palace he embarrassed himself by repeatedly getting pulled up for taking foul throw-ins.
With Kieran Trippier already a top performer, Aurier is just another obstacle who has been added to Walker-Peters’ path.
This could be acceptable if Aurier was outperforming Trippier but he is emerging right now as second best.
It would have been better for England under-20 World Cup winner Walker-Peters if they had not signed him at all.
