Klye Walker-Peters appears to be in contention to become Tottenham Hotspur’s new first-choice right-back this season.
Kyle Walker-Peters has told The Sun that Kieran Trippier’s departure from Tottenham could prove to be a positive for him, but insisted that he is not expecting an easy ride towards securing the first-choice right-back role in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Walker-Peters looks set to battle with Serge Aurier and Juan Foyth for the role in Spurs’ side this season after the Champions League finalists left Trippier behind in the Wanda Metropolitano and allowed him to join Atletico Madrid earlier in the window.
With Aurier currently injured, Walker-Peters appears set to be the player to get the nod against Aston Villa when the new Premier League season kicks off later this month.
But the youngster insisted that he is not taking the chance for granted as he reflected on Trippier’s departure.
“Is there a chink of light with Tripps leaving? I guess there is,” he told The Sun. “There will be more opportunities for me now there is one less full-back.
“But I still have to prove myself so the manager plays me when he thinks it is right. When I do get the opportunity, I just have to prove myself time and time again. At a top club like this there is always the possibility of someone coming here and taking my position.”
Walker-Peters has impressed on almost every occasion that he has played for the first-team. But at 22, it appears that a handful of supporters have concerns about whether he will be good enough to be the starting right-back for a team looking to battle at the sharp end of every competition they feature in.
It remains to be seen if the academy graduate can raise his game. But there is no question that he has a fantastic chance to prove himself with Trippier moving on and Aurier also arguably needing to prove a point.
