Kyle Scott right to pick Newcastle over Tottenham

Tottenham have reportedly missed out on Kyle Scott.

Newcastle United’s deal to sign midfielder Kyle Scott won’t make many headlines, but it seems that the Magpies have beaten other clubs to sign him.

Agent Neil Bartholomew has told The Chronicle that Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur both wanted to sign Scott, after his Chelsea contract expired.

However, Newcastle’s recruitment chief Steve Nickson fought hard for Scott, and he ended up picking the Magpies as his next home ahead of the new season.

Scott had been on the Chelsea books for 12 years having joined from Southampton in 2007, but made just one first-team appearance for the club.

That’s part of why a move to Newcastle appears to be the right decision. He’s already spent time with a top six side, and found breaking through almost impossible – even to the point of joining Dutch second division side Telstar on loan last season.

Instead, he’s now picked Newcastle, and he may well have looked at the respective midfield options at Newcastle and Spurs and decided St James’ Park as the best move.

Spurs have just splashed out on Tanguy Ndombele for starters, whilst the have homegrown talents in Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp and Jack Roles, whilst Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier remain at the club and Giovani Lo Celso may yet come in.

Whereas at Newcastle, Sean Longstaff may be the star but he’s being linked away, Mohamed Diame has gone, Isaac Hayden is looking to move, Jonjo Shelvey has been struggling to establish himself over the last year, Jack Colback isn’t quite good enough and Ki Sung-yueng has only impressed in fits and starts having suffered injuries and been forced away on international duty.

There’s a very real chance that Scott could be seen in the Newcastle first team this season, as Steve Bruce isn’t blessed with a ton of quality options in his engine room.

That’s what Scott needs now, at 21; a chance to play Premier League football. It wasn’t going to happen at Chelsea, it seemed unlikely at Spurs, and now Newcastle can give him the opportunity he’s desperate for, having chosen potential playing time over a Champions League side and surely more cash.
