Kyle Lafferty has told the Daily Record that, despite undeniably needing new signings, the deal that Rangers should prioritise this summer involves one of the current squad, while he also reaffirmed his desire to head back to Ibrox one day in the future.

Lafferty spent four years with the Gers before departing in 2012. Since then, the Light Blues have risen through the divisions and are now back playing in the Scottish Premiership.

However, based on their performance this term, the journey still has a fairly long way to go with the Light Blues 33 points adrift of the table’s summit. But while Lafferty accepted that a number of new faces are needed, he suggested that agreeing a new deal with one of the existing players is essential this summer.

“I think everyone knows that Rangers are a few players short in terms of making a challenge for the big honours in Scotland and I would say the most important signing right now would be to give Kenny Miller another contract,” he told the Record.

The 29-year-old left the club in acrimonious circumstances five years ago, but the Record reports that his contract with current club Norwich City expires at the end of the season, and he suggested that he would never close the door on the chance to come back.

“Hopefully they would look at me and think I could do a job for them. I have shown what I can do at international level in recent years and I believe I could make a positive impact at the right club for me. I really would jump at the chance to go back to Rangers,” he added.

While Lafferty damaged his relationship with the Ibrox faithful with his departure, it would hardly be a surprise if some fans, at least, considered the idea of seeing the Northern Irishman back at the club.

The forward is a free agent this summer and certainly enjoyed the best spell of his career with Rangers, so may be an astute acquisition, especially as he would clearly be fully motivated to win the supporters round.

But for some fans, the circumstances surrounding his departure, coupled with his relatively poor club form over the last few years will leave them hoping that Pedro Caixinha avoids pursuing any deal.
